Are dangerous levels of microwaves leaking from your oven?

I made the disturbing discovery today after unboxing my Trifield 100XE EMF Meter I had packed away from storage.  I discovered that the microwave oven is leaking dangerous amounts of microwaves when its in operation.  Luckily we mostly set the microwave and forget it (sometimes completely) and come back to it later for the food.

I walked around the checked the levels of various items around the house and found the following:

 

  • The microwave oven was emitting dangerous levels from the door.  Even from 7 feet away!  The shielding was not doing a good job.  From the sides where there are metal enclosures all around is safe.
  • A Panasonic massage chair emits over the 3 milligauss threshold regularly.  Even while off.
  • Old school CRT monitors and CRT TV screens emissions are very high from the back and sides.  OK if you are a few feet away from them like say watching from the couch.
  • Consumer Wifi routers are generally within the safe limits.
  • AC Adapters emit fairly high levels.  Don't keep an AC adapter near your head when you sleep at night.
  • Washing machines emit fairly high levels as well when operating.
  • AT&T's 3G microcell is relatively safe, and probably keeps the radiation from the iPhones it is serving to be safer and minimized.

 

I'm most concerned about the Microwave radiation leakage.  Imagine what a microwave oven does to an egg in under a minute, and then imagine what it could be doing to your body!

While absolute thresholds have not been established, they have been by the FDA for microwaves!  Read your owner's manual and heed the warnings about operating microwave ovens.  Get your microwave tested!

OK, so the big question is why do I need it?

Frankly from what I can tell from advertising, I can't answer that question.  I can see it revolutionizing the set top box experience above and beyond what we have now, but from what I can tell its not there yet.

It's a set-top box for your TV that allows you to watch streaming programs from a few sources.  But it costs three times as much as a New Apple TV.  

It also lets me surf the web and watch TV at the same time - I have that, it's called a TV next to the computer or a PiP capable monitor.  iPad works great for that.

It has no built in DVR and requires you to supply it.  If it added Tivo like functionality to some of these somewhat crummy DVRs with no fees, I'd jump at it.  No promises yet.

Maybe when the android apps that come out for it next year it will all make sense.

iFixit in typical fashion has got their hands on the latest Apple TV and have fully dissected it in full detail.  

What you find is not surprising based on all the already leaked news about using the same A4 processor and chips, but what is really awesome is that its the most eco-friendly set top box ever!

I like the high repair-ability factor too!  (8/10)
