Sony VBD-MA1 Multi-Function Blu-ray Disc Recorder Review

Sony's first (ever) blu-ray standalone recorder and HD one-touch burner released April 18th, 2011.  It is currently the only stand-alone, one-touch from HD camcorders to blu-ray disc unit on the market.

At a reasonably priced $299.99 it not only functions as a standalone (no computer required) video recorder, it also works as a standalone blu-ray disc burner that also burns standard DVDs.  Yes, that means you can use to burn any data you like with your PC or Mac via USB.  You may need additional software if it isn't already provided with your PC or your camcorder.

My review currently consists of 2-3 videos linked below showing the unboxing, overview, and a demonstration of the unit in action.  After some more extensive use in the coming weeks, I will provide a more detailed review and notes.

Some important answers to FAQs:

 

  • Does not do any HD encoding at all.
  • Only HD can be burned on blu-ray discs - no VHS, SD footage on Blu-Ray.
  • Only supports Sony Raw format and JPGs.
  • HD content can only be burned through USB.
  • There are no HDMI inputs or outputs.

REC mode BD 25 GB as well as DVD (minimum recording time)
FX / HD FX 2hrs 20min (2hrs 20min) – DVD (not possible)
FH / HD FH 3hrs 10min (3hrs 10min) DVD = 35min (35min)
HQ / HD HQ 5hrs 35min (4hrs 15min) DVD = 1hr (45min)
SP / HD SP 7hrs 5min (5hrs 15min) DVD = 1hr 15min (55min)
LP / HD LP 9hrs 40min (7hrs 55min) DVD = 1hr 45min (1hr 25min)
