Since I no longer have the Modlet to do a followup video and extended testing I thought I'd post a tip about the On/Off switch via the smartphone app from ThinkEco customer service:

"Please make sure the USB gateway is plugged into a USB port on you host computer before you use the ON/OFF switch on the smartphone app. If you host computer is connect to the internet and your phone has a good wireless signal the appliance plugged into the modlet should respond in seconds."

If you do have a computer running all the time (which I do), the On/Off switching is a nice fringe benefit in additional to the simplicity of automatic power saving the Modlet provides.
