'Mag-Safe' USB Cables

CES has a lot of vapor-ware, and things that may or may not make it to market or are too impractical to ever be brough in mass market.  Not these magnetic USB cables though.  They are probably the most practical thing I've seen so far at CES that is out now (if you backed it on Kickstarter), or coming really soon. Micro-USB version is out now, and Apple lightning coming later this year.  You can interchange the magnetic tips as they become available.

Virtual Reality Has Matured This Year

One of the cooler things I saw last year. Virtuix Omni

A video posted by Mike Mu (@mikemuonline) on Jan 6, 2016 at 1:18pm PST

If last year was the year of the drones, this year so far it seems to be about Virtual Reality. The above video clip shows Virtuix Omni back with updated software demonstration and competition in a type of first person virtual shooter.

VR Glasses were a lot more prevalent as well, with the most promising new technology coming from ODG with their Reticle OS 2, running on top of Android.  You feel like a terminator with the glasses on, with the HUD and Augmented Reality display running across the glasses.

This Exo Skeleton Suit is Designed to Age You!

Genworth R70i body suit makes you feel older.

Genworth's body suit was designed to be the exact opposite of Iron Man Suit.  It doesn't give you super powers, it takes away your current abilities so that you know what its like for your body to age, and suffer from all the things that affect baby boomers and older.

CES 2016 - Security?

CES2k15 Day 2 Canon EOS 6D 1-7-2015 4-14-05 PM_DxO10

CES this year's focus appears to be security.  Not security products, but security in the form of bag restrictions, bag searches, metal detectors etc.  You can read the official New Bag Restrictions for 2016 here.

None of my backpacks fit the size limitation of 12” x 17” x 6(30 cm x 43 cm x 15 cm).  So I'm pretty much not going in as press (even press have to carry everything), and I'm not going to bring a lot of gear for coverage.

How to Pick the Right SD Card for your Camera

Picking the Right SD Memory Card for your Camera by mikemuonline

For most new cameras, any SD card that you get that is 64GB and above will work just fine.  Why 64GB cards?  Well its close to the sweet spot in pricing, and speed performance.  The key differences you want to watch for are the durability, and write speed.  The read speed will typically meet or exceet the write speed specification.  If it doesn't show the write speed on the packaging then its likely not the best - so watch out if your Video mode requires a certain bit-rate.

If you have an older camera (more than a few years old), you may have to get SDHC cards or below - stick to 8GB SD Cards.  Pay attention to whether the camera supports SDHC or SDXC cards with the XC ones being the newer, faster, higher capacity capable specification.

For 4K video, on the higher spec cameras you will want to look into something like the following:

And even those are not high enough for the highest 100MBps rating required to unlock the RX series 100 MBps video.

Some newer cameras designed to be pocketable use physically smaller cards called micro-sd cards. They're about the size of my pinky's fingernail and are compatible with cameras that use SD cards if you use a MicroSD adapter.
