Its quite a versatile microphone that helps to improve the sound quality be simply moving the audio microphones off the camera, and adding a bit of versatility to the sound field. I'd say at the introductory price of over $150, it was a give or take depending on just how bad your built-in mikes are. But at under $100, and full compatibility with most cameras with an input, its a decent upgrade for most.

If you are looking for an alternative to this microphone, around the same current price, for a non-Sony camera, or DSLR with microphone input: Consider the TASCAM TM-2X - X-Y Pattern Stereo Cardioid Mic for DSLR Filmmaking.

Note that this is an unpowered microphone, but most DSLRs have the plug-in power feature so you should be good to go. Hopefully review and personal take on this up by summer.
