Going by the philosophy two is one, and one is none, I travel with backups of anything important to get the job done.  For car navigation, that means my iPhone 4 with Navigon and my TomTom 540TM XXL.  The following is based on my observations based on using a dedicated TomTom unit versus the Navigon GPS navigation software on my iPhone 4.
