85C Bakery Cafes Openings
I saw some new openings in Garden Grove and in Newark - but the poster says plans to expand all over USA -- Job openings available. While I'm happy they're doing well, because obviously Taiwanese Bakery Cafes are awesome (I might be a bit biased), I'm seeing the quality of some of my favorite breads deteriorating.

This type of fruit was on the show Terra Nova

It's called a Dragon Fruit, and this version is red inside. My mom grew it in the backyard starting back when you could not find this type of fruit in the store. Apparently it's also known as a Pitaya, but Dragon Fruit is so much more fun.
When it flowers, it's absolutely stunning. I think I tweeted a picture of the flower over the summer.
How I Make Fast French Fries - Use A Mandoline Slicer!
I realized I just showed how I get them all sliced up - that's usually the most tedious part by hand. So here are a few more steps in case you aren't going all healthy and using the T-fal Acti-Fry.
- Dry off the fries - I just let them sit for a little while with the fan running. If your'e impatient, just blot them down with a clean cloth.
- Setup your fryer to 300-325 degrees, and batch fry them till they've all been in the fryer like 30 seconds or so.
- Set them aside and let them cool down a little while you then set the fryer to 400 degrees.
- Now run those fries through the fryer till they're golden.
- Take out, let the oil drain off, and season with your favorite seasonings and enjoy!

Tips from Road Foodie founder Michael Stern
Road Foodie Michael SternMichael Stern, author and founder of the Road Food series of books, and website gave the following top 3 tips on finding good food on the road:
1. Roll down your windows and sniff your way to good food.
2. Look for a restaurant full of off-duty police cars, fire trucks. Chances are they serve decent food, at a reasonable price that is safe to eat.
3. Look for places that do only one thing really well.

Wisdom of the crowds = just plain dumb sometimes
Went to a restaurant, packed like sardines, with people waiting outside to get in. It took over half an hour to get seats inside and another 15 minutes to get get food after ordering. From what I can tell passing this restaurant all the time, that's typical.
Food was not good.
Presentation was poor.
Service was bad.
Ambiance was typical loud, shouting in your ear Chinese restaurant loud.
Order accuracy was bad, they kept trying to shove a horrible seafood fried fruit platter on us.
Parking was non-existent.
Why do people keep coming here in droves?!
Pictures to come.
What prompted me to start the post was that my family and I went to a restaurant in Alhambra, CA which we almost always pass because its on one of the busiest most used intersections there.
Every time we pass there's always people waiting outside to get in for dinner (usually on weekends). One weekend, we decided to visit.
The wait was 30 minutes, the food came out slowly, cold and out of order, and the service was bad.
It goes to show you can't always trust that a restaurant is good just because there's a lot of people waiting to get in.
Costco to be adding Gelato
At a few test stores, Costco is unveiling gelato ice cream in their menu of prepared foods. Mmm! Pizza and ice-cream. Now if only they would bring over that Peking duck pizza I've been enjoying over in Taiwan.
So far I have only encountered Costcos in San Diego County to have the Gelato.
